Code of Practice for Multicultural Mediators
1️⃣ Respect for Diversity and Cultural Sensitivity
- Multicultural mediators should respect and value the diversity of cultures, beliefs, and practices.
- Mediators should strive to be culturally sensitive and avoid imposing their own cultural biases or preferences on the mediation process.
- They should demonstrate respect for all parties’ cultural backgrounds and ensure an inclusive and non-discriminatory environment.
2️⃣ Impartiality and Neutrality
- Multicultural mediators should maintain an impartial and neutral stance throughout the mediation process.
- They should not favor any particular cultural group or individual but treat all parties with fairness and equality.
- Mediators should refrain from making judgments based on cultural differences and focus on facilitating open and constructive dialogue.
3️⃣ Cultural Competence
- Mediators should continually develop their cultural competence by staying informed about different cultures, traditions, and customs.
- They should strive to understand the cultural contexts and perspectives of the parties involved in the mediation process.
- Mediators should be aware of potential cultural barriers and work towards bridging the gaps to facilitate effective communication and understanding.
